If you’re seeking cafes in Sunderland that offer both great taste and visual appeal, you’ll love this beautiful café housed in a stunning Victorian building, directly across from the Museum & Winter Gardens.
Here’s why Café Floriana should be your new go-to spot.

A BRUNCH ESCAPE LIKE NO OTHER
Step out of the grey, rainy weather and into this vibrant floral oasis. Café Floriana’s interior is a treat for the eyes, with elegant panelling, parquet flooring and floral touches at every turn.
Run by dynamic mother-daughter duo Kate and Emilia, former owners of Front Parlour, Café Floriana is all about fresh food, great coffee and a welcoming atmosphere. Plus, dogs are welcome too.
What sets Café Floriana apart from other spots for brunch in Sunderland is its dedication to inclusivity and community. Their menu caters to everyone, with fully vegan and gluten-free options available. They source ingredients locally, from bread to cakes, supporting other North East independent businesses.
WHAT’S ON THE NEW CAFÉ FLORIANA MENU?
After hearing the news that Café Floriana was launching a new menu, of course, we had to try the new menu ourselves. The hardest part? Choosing what to order. With a wide range of all-day brunch dishes, the options are endless.
ALL-DAY BRUNCH IN SUNDERLAND
First up, drinks. Beth went for the indulgent Biscoff milkshake, a customer favourite, while Rachael ordered the beautifully presented pistachio latte, complete with pretty edible flowers on top.
When it came to food, Beth chose the vibrant rainbow smash – a dish complete with beetroot houmous, goat’s cheese, mint, seeds, Roquito red pepper pearls and balsamic glaze on seeded, crunchy sourdough – this really embraced the concept of ‘eating the rainbow’. Meanwhile, cheese lover Rachael couldn’t resist the hot halloumi – crispy halloumi, creamy avocado, hot honey, pomegranate and garlic on a perfectly toasted sourdough slice.
The presentation? Absolute artwork. Almost too pretty to eat – but we couldn’t help ourselves and had to tuck in. Every bite was fresh and delicious, leaving us feeling fresh as a daisy rather than sluggish.

Other must-try brunch dishes
Here are a few other dishes we had our eyes on the all-day brunch menu…
- Smashed avo: avocado, lemon, feta, pomegranate and pumpkin seeds on seeded sourdough
- Eggs “bene-cado”: poached eggs, serrano ham and avocado hollandaise on a toasted muffin
- Huevos rancheros: poached egg, avocado, black beans, lime, feta, pico de gallo and sriracha on corn tortillas
- Sunshine Buddha bowl: Greek yoghurt, nutty granola, mango compote, berries, banana, coconut and chia seeds
- Smoked salmon muffin: smoked salmon, cream cheese, pea shoots, capers and lemon on a toasted muffin
- Ultimate sausage sandwich: Cumberland sausages, tomato, rocket and red onion chutney in a soft white roll
Waffles and French toast
If you have a sweet tooth, you’re in for a treat. Choose between stacked Belgian waffles or French toast made with challah bread and topped with your choice of sauce – maple syrup, chocolate hazelnut or pistachio.
