Berwick-upon-Tweed, the most northerly town in England, is the perfect destination for a day trip from Newcastle.
With its gorgeous coastal scenery, interesting history, independent shops, and fantastic food scene, this charming town is packed with hidden gems waiting to be explored.
So, if you’re looking for a wholesome day trip, here’s everything you need to know…

Getting there: Journey time and parking
By car – Berwick is just one hour and 15 minutes from Newcastle via the A1. Parking is easy, with free long-stay parking at Castlegate Car Park (TD15 1LF) and short-stay options around the town.
By train – If you’d rather leave the car at home, hop on a train from Newcastle Central Station – Berwick is only 45 minutes away by rail, with regular services from LNER and CrossCountry. The train station is just a short walk from the town centre.
Morning: History, walks and coffee
Kick off with coffee at Northern Edge Coffee. Start your day at this local roastery, serving fresh, speciality graded Arabic coffee and homemade bakes.
Once the caffeine has kicked in, walk the historic Berwick Town Walls. These Elizabethan town walls offer impressive views over the River Tweed and coastline. The full circular walk is 1.3 miles and takes about 40 minutes with stops for photos.
Visit The Barracks & Main Guard – Step into Berwick’s military past at this English Heritage site, home to one of the first purpose-built army barracks in England in the 18th century. The ‘By Beat of Drum’ exhibition gives an insight into the life of the British infantry and there’s also a range of other permanent and temporary exhibitions.
HLN hidden gem: Spittal promenade and beach – If you fancy a coastal walk, head over the Old Bridge to Spittal Beach, a peaceful, sandy stretch perfect for a morning stroll. This beach, with its Victorian promenade, has been a well-known holiday resort since the 18th century when visitors travelled for miles to bathe in the sea and drink from the spa well.

Lunchtime: Where to eat
Foxtons Wine Bar & Restaurant – A stylish spot with locally sourced seafood (delivered daily from Eyemouth), seasonal dishes, and a great wine list. The seafood platters are impressive, and they have daily seafood specials depending on the catches of the day. It has a wide range of vegan and veggie options too, as well as a great value Pensioners Lunch, offering two courses for £14.50 or three courses for £17.50.
Limoncello – If you’re in the mood for authentic Italian pizza and pasta, this vibrant family-run restaurant is a great spot. Voted ‘Best Casual Dining Restaurant in Northumberland’, Limoncello offers great value Italian food (the three-course daily lunch special is only £7.95).
Castlegate Chippy – For classic fish and chips, head to Castlegate Chippy. It does what it says on the tin and is one of the best-rated in the town.
Afternoon: Exploring, shopping and culture
Discover Granary Gallery – hidden away in Berwick YHA, Granary Gallery showcases rotating exhibitions from local and national artists. Previous exhibitions have included artists such as Turner, LS Lowry and The Glasgow Boys & Girls.
Shop local – Berwick-upon-Tweed is filled with unique independent businesses. Bridge Street, West Street and Hide Hill are all lined with boutiques, bookshops, florists and artisan stores.
