The crocus lawn at Wallington
Early March
Head down to National Trust site Wallington during the first weeks of March to see their iconic crocus lawn. Thousands of vibrant purple crocuses burst into life inside its walled garden, alongside many other beautiful bulbs shooting up around the grounds to signify the start of spring.
A sea of bulbs blooming at Ormesby Hall
Mid-March and April
Ormesby Hall in spring is a real treat for the eyes. As you walk up, you can’t miss the sea of native daffodils across the front lawn. Expect to see thousands of brightly coloured flowers. From mid-March to mid-April, Ormesby Hall is THE spot to be for a burst of colour and get you into those spring vibes.

Daffodils at Alnwick Castle
Mid-March and April
Alnwick Castle re-opens its doors to the public again on Friday 28th March, and visitors can expect to be welcomed by a beautiful field of 250,000 daffodils. This is a gorgeous spot for nature lovers and the perfect way to embrace the start of spring. If you fancy heading inside, there are a range of fun activities which are great for kids and adults. Definitely worth a visit.
An incredible rhododendron display at Cragside
May
Visit Cragside in May to discover blankets of rhododendrons in the 1000-acre designer garden. The rhododendrons at Cragside put on quite a show, turning the landscape into a floral paradise every spring – but they’re only in bloom for around three weeks – keep an eye on HLN for updates so you don’t miss out.

Bottle-feed lambs at Newham Grange Farm
Late March and early April
Visit Newham Grange Farm in Middlesbrough from late March to early April, and you’ll have a chance to bottle-feed their adorable lambs. A great family day out, they have a range of animals to meet, and always have a great events calendar over the Easter period. With accessible facilities and a scenic loop path perfect for cycling or walking, it’s a great day out.
The hatching of baby pufflings on the Farne Islands
May – July
Take an Inner Farne Island Landing Trip between May and July to see thousands of baby pufflings hatching. Warning, this isn’t for the faint-hearted. The protective parents can get aggressive if you get too close (an umbrella is recommended to protect against the diving). For a more serene experience, pack binoculars and take a tour that doesn’t land on the island. We also highly recommend the sunset cruise which is a gorgeous experience.

The largest Taihaku cherry blossom collection in the world at Alnwick Garden
Late April and early May
An experience not to miss, head to Alnwick Garden towards the end of April to see the largest global collection of Taihaku cherry blossom trees in full bloom. The cherry orchard has 329 Taihaku trees which burst into white blooms. It usually appears towards the end of April but it can be influenced by climate conditions, so keep an eye on the Alnwick Garden website for updates as there’s only a two week window to catch this incredible display.
