Looking for the best brunch in Durham? These are the 5 cosy cafés and riverside spots everyone loves

Flat White Kitchen
40 Saddler Street, Durham, DH1 3NU
A cult favourite, this trendy spot was born out of the popularity of the smaller Flat White on Elvet Bridge. The coffee is excellent, and its brunch menu – served until 4.00pm daily – caters to everyone, including sweet, savoury, and vegan dishes. The caramelised banana pancakes served with cinnamon cream, candied pecans and house syrup are absolutely delicious. There’s also a great vegan breakfast bowl, sweetcorn fritters with smashed avo, the house fry up… we could go on. Well worth a visit.
Riverview Kitchen
20 Silver Street, Durham, DH1 3RB
Right on the river, this brunch spot has gorgeous views, with indoor and outdoor seating. The brunch menu offers something for everyone, with gluten-free, veggie and vegan options available. The pancakes stacks are epic, with a stack of four American pancakes loaded with toppings. There are the typical eggs and fry ups, as well as a super delicious breakfast scone – a cheese scone with bacon and a fried egg.

Leonards Coffee House
38 Saddler Street, Durham, DH1 3NU
A cute, rustic, coffee house, kitchen and bakery is hidden away in a pretty courtyard off the main square in Durham. With great coffee and generous, tasty brunch dishes, this spot is a great hidden gem to know for a quieter brunch spot. The avocado and halloumi on sourdough served with house sweet chilli jam is an excellent choice, they also have a selection of hash bowls, brioche breakfast sandwiches, bagels, French toast and more.
Waffley Good Company
95 Elvet Bridge, Durham, DH1 3AG
This breakfast and brunch restaurant is a great value option, serving excellent food at an affordable price point. Known for their friendly staff and great customer service, Waffley specialises in unique brunch waffles, combining elements like a full English breakfast with maple syrup on a fluffy waffle. Highly rated.

Cafédral
1 First Floor, Owengate, Durham, DH1 3HB
Tripadvisor’s highest-rated brunch place in Durham, Cafédral is known for its quirky interior and top-notch food. While it doesn’t serve traditional brunch, it’s recommended thanks to its fresh and flavourful food, with excellent homemade cakes (try the orange marmalade cake), a variety of fresh scones as well as sandwiches and wraps.
