Jacket potatoes are having an unexpected resurgence – these are the trending pimped up potatoes to try in the North East

Anyone on TikTok will know that jacket potatoes – those humble, hearty staples – are making an unexpected resurgence on the UK’s street food scene.

In a nutshell, there’s been a family-run hot potato stall in Preston Market since 1955. It was taken over in 2020 by brothers Jacob and Harley Nelson who used TikTok to build a community of over 5 million spud lovers. As a result, they’re now expanding across the UK and jacket potatoes, well, they’re having their moment.

Here are the North East businesses following suit, bringing fully loaded jacket potatoes to our lives.

Disclaimer – it turns out to be incredibly hard to take an aesthetically pleasing photograph of a fully loaded jacket potato – but trust us, they taste so good.

Spuds with an Indian Twist

Car park of Namaste Indian Restaurant, Sunniside, NE16 5ES

The jacket potato hut that’s going viral on North East TikTok. It’s our OG answer to Spud Bros – a tiny hut in the car park of an Indian restaurant that has huge queues all day and regularly sells out, so get there early. Even their cheese and beans has an extra twist, topped with crispy onions, but the real crowd pleasers are the Indian specials – regular curry, madras and masala, served with so much cheese and sauce you can barely see the potato underneath. 10/10 must try.
