Hold on to your feathers – Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake is soaring back into Newcastle Theatre Royal for its 30th anniversary.

From Tuesday 25th March to Saturday 5th April 2025, this world-renowned, genre-defying production is set to wow us once again with its bold reimagining of Tchaikovsky’s timeless masterpiece.

HOW MATTHEW BOURNE’S SWAN LAKE IS DIFFERENT

This isn’t your ordinary Swan Lake, when Bourne first took flight with his version in 1995, it made waves and turned tradition on its head. By swapping the female corps-de-ballet for a fierce male ensemble, he created a sensation that’s still rippling through the world of dance. It’s thrilling, it’s emotive, and yes, it’s bold – but it’s also a ballet like no other.

Matthew Bourne is famous for pushing the boundaries of dance and performance, and this Swan Lake revival is no exception. The production, which has captivated audiences across the globe, has won over 30 prestigious awards, including three Tony Awards for Best Director, Best Choreography and Best Costume Design.

30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF BOURNE’S SWAN LAKE

After 30 years, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake is still taking centre stage as the world’s most successful dance theatre production. Bourne’s innovative approach to dance has truly taken off, and with a cast of dazzling new talent, this 30th anniversary tour promises to raise the stakes once again.

“When our Swan Lake was premiered nearly 30 years ago, it created a sensation none of us could have predicted, I think we knew we had a good idea but could never have dreamt of the impact it would have. This production has changed lives, created new audiences and inspired young dancers – and now, as we take flight again, I’m full of anticipation for what this new revival will bring.”

If you’ve seen Swan Lake before, you know it’s an experience like no other. If you haven’t, then you’re in for a real treat. Picture this: dramatic music, stunning choreography and a captivating story that’s both dark and touching. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the ballet or a newcomer to the world of dance, this revival is an absolute must-see.

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake is famous for its ability to transform audiences and inspire the next generation of dancers. The production’s “talent development” programme, including the Cygnet School and Swan School, nurtures young performers who make their debut in this production. It helps the next generation of aspiring dancers, and it’s all part of Bourne’s dedication to ensuring that the magic of dance continues forward into the future.

After the success of Edward Scissorhands in 2024, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures returns to Newcastle Theatre Royal with Swan Lake and The Midnight Bell.
