PERSONALISED VOWS AND PROMISES

Choosing your legal vows

Did you know legally, there are only two parts of your ceremony where specific wording must be used – during the declaration and the contractual vows?
But you can still choose from three legal options, that’ll all be provided in your Ceremony Pack from Northumberland Registrars. And beyond these required words, providing there is no religious content, the rest is totally up to you, it’s your day, your way

Exchanging of rings

Your ring exchange is a beautiful symbolic moment in your ceremony, and Northumberland Registrars offer five ring vows to choose from. Or you have the option to write your own personal words for the exchange, too.

For an extra memorable touch, if your venue allows animals, why not let your four-legged friend be a part of your ceremony as the ring bearer? Or how about having a majestic owl to deliver your rings?

Personal promises

You could choose to make a personal promise to one another. Promises give you the chance to express your unique values, commitments and your love for one another in the ceremony.

Your ceremony pack includes several pre-written options, but Northumberland Registrars encourage you to write your own if you prefer. Funny or tearjerking, they’re all about you as a couple.

(Please note that no wording from religious ceremonies may be used.)

HEARTFELT UNITY CEREMONY IDEAS

The rose ceremony

A touching and symbolic tradition, this involves exchanging two roses as a sign of love and commitment. This simple but touching gesture can be made even more special by involving family, friends or even the registrar. Plus, you can even get them pressed for a sentimental keepsake after your wedding.

Ring warming ceremony

A ring warming ceremony is a heartfelt way to involve your guests. Before the rings are exchanged, they are passed through the hands of your loved ones, who each take a moment to send their well wishes and blessings.

The hand ceremony

A hand ceremony is a beautiful addition to your wedding – have your tissues at the ready. After exchanging rings, you hold hands with your partner while a chosen guest or the registrar reads a passage about the significance of hands in marriage.

Unity candle ceremony

A powerful symbol of love and light, a unity candle ceremony represents the coming together of your two families or the bond between you as a couple. Two family members can light separate candles, and together, you both then light a central candle, symbolising your new union.

The sand ceremony

At a sand ceremony you both pour different coloured sands into a container, blending them together as a lasting memento of your union and something that you can treasure forever.  This symbolic act represents your past, present and future together, creating a visual reminder of your bond.

Memory candle ceremony

Your wedding is an emotional day, especially if you’ve lost a loved one. A memory candle ceremony is a deeply moving addition that honours your late loved ones. You can choose where to include this in your ceremony and Northumberland Registrar can provide example wording to make it a special moment.

CHOOSING YOUR OWN MUSIC AND READINGS

Incorporating music

Music has the power to set the tone and create lasting memories. Music can be incorporated at different points of your ceremony, whether it be as guests arrive, during your entrance or while signing the register.

Pick special songs that mean something to you as a couple or even your family. Think about having live music, whether instrumental, vocal or how about a guest sing-along? A great and fun way to involve all of your guests.

Choosing readings

A well-chosen reading can bring emotion, humour or wisdom to your ceremony. Whether it’s a classic poem, a heartfelt passage from a book or something uniquely personal, readings are a great way to involve your loved ones.
