Walk of the month: The Big Dan Burn Walk

Northumberland National Park Authority has announced the temporary renaming of the beloved Elsdon Burn Walk to the Big Dan Burn Walk in honour of Newcastle United’s monumental Carabao Cup victory.

This special gesture celebrates the incredible achievement of Northumberland’s Dan Burn, the Blyth-born player who not only scored a vital goal in the final but also earned the Man of the Match accolade, bringing glory to Newcastle United and immense pride to his home county.

The Big Dan Burn Walk, a scenic trail renowned for its breathtaking views, now stands as a tribute to Dan’s remarkable contribution to the team and the inspiration his story brings to the local community. Visitors are encouraged to lace up their boots and experience the walk to celebrate the beautiful landscape and a local hero’s triumph.

THE ROUTE

Start from the car park in Elsdon

Cross the bridge back into the village and turn left, following the road to Newcastle and Morpeth around the village green.

Just outside the village

Take the right-hand fork in the road (signed Newcastle) and cross over the bridge with the metal railings. Go through the gate on the right, signed Haining, and follow the path along the edge of the field, keeping the fence on your right.

Cross the sleeper bridge and, on joining the farm road, turn right. Go through the gate and continue up and along the road to the Haining.

Pass in front of the house

Continue on for a short distance. At the gap in the wall, turn left and continue up the grassy path through the plantation. On reaching the fence, cross the stile, turn left and continue up to the gate.

Cross the road

Keeping the wall on your left, walk over Gallow Hill, stopping to admire the view from the highest point. Continue to follow the wall to the gate in the corner of the field. Go through the gate, with the wall now on your right; carry on along the path, heading for Hillhead Cottage.

Just before the house, turn left

Cross the stile and continue downhill. On reaching the road, turn right and then left over the stile just after the barn. Go straight down the field and cross over the two stiles at the bottom. Turn left along the main road back to Elsdon.

Follow the road back to the village
