HLN reader recommends: MUKA, Seaton Delaval

By @gran_with_a_van
A County Durham lass by birth, I now live in a small village on the outskirts of Whitley Bay – and I feel so lucky. I’ve got the Northumberland coastline on my doorstep, not to mention the beautiful countryside all around.
While I love hitting the road in my campervan to explore the country and uncover hidden gems, I’m also a big believer in supporting local – whether that’s by shopping small or eating at local independents. And in this area, it’s not hard to eat local and eat well.
We’re spoiled for choice with brilliant cafes and restaurants in North Shields, Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and Morpeth, but today, I want to give a shout-out to a place a little more under-the-radar. This gem is close to my home and very close to my heart (and stomach!).

Recently, I visited Muka, a local café-restaurant on the edge of Seaton Delaval, just a stone’s throw from New Hartley. This wasn’t my first visit, and it definitely won’t be my last. One of the best things? On a good day, I can walk there.
Muka serves a wide variety of dishes, from pizza and pasta to steaks and seafood. There’s something for everyone. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, the staff attentive and courteous, and the service always spot-on. Word is definitely getting out, so if you’re planning to visit over a weekend or for Sunday lunch, I’d recommend booking ahead.
They’re open from 12noon every day except Mondays, and if you’re not after a full meal, they also serve a great selection of cakes and coffee – perfect for a pit stop.
On Sundays, they serve a traditional roast for just £11 (a total bargain!). You’ll get a choice of beef, pork or chicken with all the trimmings – Yorkshire pudding, roast and mash, plus seasonal veg. Everything arrives piping hot and beautifully presented. And if, like me, you love a generous helping of gravy, you won’t be disappointed.
From the main menu, my go-to is the sea bass fillets (£20), served on a bed of rich, creamy spinach and pesto risotto. The fish is always perfectly cooked, with gloriously crisped skin – an absolute treat. I’ve also tried the surf and turf, which is another standout. Tender, high-quality steak cooked precisely to your liking, juicy prawns, and a choice of chips, salad or veg – delicious.
During the week, they offer some brilliant value specials. You can get two courses from the specials menu for just £12, or two courses à la carte for £18 – check the website for when these are available.

There’s a wide range of desserts on offer, plus a few daily specials that the staff will tell you about. I didn’t have one this time, but I’ve tried them on previous visits, and they’ve always hit the spot (and they’re reasonably priced, too, starting from just £5.50). If you’re after something smaller, go for the affogato – simple, delicious, and perfect after a big meal.
There’s also outdoor seating, ideal for soaking up the sun in spring and summer, and Muka offers takeaway too if you want to enjoy their food at home.
For me, Muka is my go-to whenever family or friends come to visit. It’s family-friendly, consistently excellent, and always welcoming. Great food, helpful staff and a dedicated chef – what’s not to love?
I’ll be back soon with more hidden gems from my local wanderings.
