One of the North East’s most beloved artists, Alan Reed, is marking 40 years of his career with a landmark solo exhibition at Blagdon Gallery.
Open now until Saturday 11th May, this special showcase highlights the beautiful watercolours and oil paintings that have made Reed a household name across the region and beyond.
With a career spanning four decades, Alan Reed’s work is instantly recognisable for its use of light, texture and movement – whether he’s capturing a quiet moment on the River Tyne or the golden architecture of a sun-soaked piazza in Italy.
This exhibition offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in Reed’s creativity, from his earliest plein-air sketches to his most recent international commissions.
A tribute to his father
A collection of works by Alan’s late father, Kenneth Reed, a talented artist in his own right, adds an emotional and retrospective depth to the exhibition. Known for his distinctive paintings of golf courses around the world, Kenneth’s work has been exhibited globally, from London to New York and beyond.

About Alan Reed
Born in Newcastle, Alan began his professional career in 1984 with a solo exhibition at the Assembly Rooms on Fenkle Street. Since then, his work has taken him around the world, but his heart has always remained firmly rooted in the North East.
Over his career, he’s built a reputation not only for his paintings but also for his dedication to keeping traditional techniques alive. His practice focuses on watercolour and oil, with a particular gift for capturing atmospheric landscapes and city scenes.
Visitors to the Blagdon Gallery show can expect to see a wide-ranging selection of Reed’s best-known pieces, alongside lesser-seen works and personal favourites chosen by the artist himself.
