May movies: What we’re watching at the cinema this month

From superhero team-ups and long-awaited sequels to horror returns and feel-good reboots, here’s what to watch in May.

Thunderbolts – 1st May

After finding themselves caught in a deadly trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes are forced to work together on a dangerous mission that will make them confront their pasts. The cast features Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman and David Harbour. If you’re an MCU superfan or just love a good action movie, this 36th entry in the superhero franchise is worth a watch.

Destination: Bloodlines – 14th May

Plagued by a violent, recurring nightmare of a tower collapse, college student Stefanie heads home to track down the one person who might be able to break the cycle and save her family from the horrific fate that seems to await them. She soon realises there’s a disturbing pattern behind these events and must fight to stop Death from reclaiming her family’s bloodline. The horror film marks the sixth instalment in the Final Destination series, following Final Destination 5 way back in 2011.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning – 19th May

“Our lives are the sum of our choices.” Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth instalment in the iconic Mission: Impossible series. A direct sequel to Dead Reckoning Part One (2023), the film is directed by Christopher McQuarrie and stars Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Angela Bassett, all reprising their roles. Picking up where the previous film left off, IMF agent Ethan Hunt continues his mission to stop Gabriel from obtaining the powerful AI program known as “The Entity.”

Lilo & Stitch – 21st May

Disney’s latest live-action reimagining brings the 2002 animated classic Lilo & Stitch back to life in a wildly funny and touching new way. The story follows a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, the film stars Sydney Elizabeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance, Zach Galifianakis and newcomer Maia Kealoha. After the backlash to Snow White, Disney will be hoping this remake hits the mark.

Karate Kid: Legends – 30th May

Karate Kid: Legends is the sixth film in The Karate Kid franchise and takes place after the events of hit Netflix series Cobra Kai (2018–2025). Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) arrives in Beijing, where Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) has been searching for him. Han has a new protégé, Li Fong (Ben Wang), and the two mentors must work together to guide him. Li attracts the attention of a formidable local karate champion and is driven by a desire to defend himself. Guided by the wisdom of his kung fu teacher and Daniel, Li merges their unique styles to prepare for an epic martial arts showdown.

The Salt Path – 30th May

The Salt Path tells the profound true story of husband and wife Raynor (Jason Isaacs) and Moth Winn (Gillian Anderson) as they undertake a 630-mile, year-long trek along the beautiful but rugged Cornish, Devon and Dorset coastline. After being forced from their home due to legal troubles, they make the desperate decision to walk — hoping to find solace and acceptance in nature. Armed with only a few essentials, every step along the path becomes a testament to their growing strength. This is a journey that’s exhilarating, challenging and quietly life-affirming.

Doctor Who – Two-Part Season Finale (Wish World & The Reality War) – 31st May

Experience time and space on the big screen as Doctor Who lands in cinemas for an epic two-part season finale. Ncuti Gatwa stars as the Doctor, alongside Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra and Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday. Belinda has been kidnapped by robots, faced a terrifying god and encountered a creature of pure evil on her travels. With the TARDIS still unable to get her home to Earth, she must fight for her life, as the Doctor faces an almighty threat to reality itself. The finale will also be airing on BBC One and iPlayer, and, judging by this series alone, it will be epic.
