9 comfortable & creative coworking spaces in the North East

Work-life can be a little lonely when you freelance, consult, or hold a remote post. Coworking spaces offer a flexible and affordable alternative to working from home — somewhere you can both socialise and focus, and get the creative juices flowing.

This list covers the most comfortable and creative coworking spaces in the North East. They’re all great for different reasons so, when choosing one for you, make sure to:

  • Look at their opening hours. You don’t want to be getting kicked out at 4pm if you’re in meetings ’till 5.30pm.
  • Check for call booths. If your role tends to involve lots of calls or meetings, you’ll want a workspace that offers privacy.
  • Ask for a free day trial. Taking a coworking space for a (free) spin is the best way to see if it works for you.

Cobalt Studios, Newcastle

Coworking spaces don’t get much more creative than this. Housed on the top floor of Cobalt Studios — an independent arts, gigs, and events venue in Newcastle’s trendy Ouseburn Valley — Cobalt’s dedicated coworking space has all the essentials (and then a little more).

There are plenty of monitors to plug into, barista-made coffee (a payable extra), and the (incredibly cool) furniture was made by hand by one of the venue’s founders. There’s a large sunny balcony with seating and a wood-burning fire for those days when the North East weather just can’t make up its mind!

Coworking: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm

If your role requires a risk-free WiFi connection, Portland House is the only building in Newcastle with its own private, backup power provision — so you’ll never get disconnected!

The space itself has been restored with respect to its 130-year history; there’s a stunning,  original Victorian spiral staircase and glass ceiling, plus modern showers, meeting rooms, and outdoor balcony seating.

Again, Cubo has venues across a lot of the UK including Manchester, Edinburgh, and London. So if you tend to travel with your role, this could be a good group to join.

And if you need 24/7 access to a workspace then Cubo’s Hot Desk membership has you covered.
