Looking for things to do in Newcastle that don’t involve endless scrolling or Netflix marathons? Discovery Museum has the answer – and trust us, it’s not your typical Friday evening.

Discovery Nights: Unplugged is back on Friday 18th July from 6pm – 9pm, and it’s bringing all the chill vibes (with zero screen time).

This adults-only after-hours event is part of the museum’s Discovery Nights series, and this one is all about slowing down and switching off. That’s right – no phones, no stress, just mindful moments, creative fun and some well-earned me-time.

And the best part? It all takes place inside one of Newcastle’s most iconic museums, after dark.

WHAT’S DISCOVERY NIGHTS: UNPLUGGED ALL ABOUT?

Inspired by Steam to Green: A North East Energy Revolution — the museum’s award-winning two-year programme — Unplugged is a relaxed and refreshing evening for adults-only. The idea? Enjoy the museum in a totally different light (literally), away from the usual digital distractions. It’s your chance to engage with history and creativity in a more mindful, analogue way.

From gentle, self-led sketching sessions to quiet reading corners and retro board games, this isn’t your average museum visit. There’s even a bar for that all-important post-work wind-down, plus chilled-out music to help set the vibe.

EVERYTHING TO EXPECT ON THE NIGHT

Get ready for a carefully curated lineup of low-key, feel-good activities scattered throughout the Discovery Museum’s beautiful gallery spaces. Enjoy mindful meditation to ground you in the moment, book swaps for fellow literature lovers and behind-the-scenes access to the Tyne & Wear Archives.

Try your hand at sketching stations featuring vintage costume collections, dive into some retro board games for old-school fun or sample embroidery tasters with artist Richard Bliss.

You can also craft sea glass with Nature Makers, take part in pub-style quizzes hosted by local comedian Si Beckwith and experience live storytelling from the incredible Justine Boussard, also known as the Amateur Ancestor. There’s something for everyone, whether you want to get stuck into some mindful making or simply wander and soak up the atmosphere.
