Calling all culture lovers, 2025 is already looking like a showstopper at Newcastle Theatre Royal, but now Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures is making a return.
Matthew Bourne’s award-winning production of The Midnight Bell is set to grace the stage from Tuesday 8th – Saturday 12thJuly 2025 for the very first time.
If you’re into evocative storytelling, dance that pulls at your heartstrings and a bit of vintage Soho glamour – this one’s for you.

STEP INTO 1930S LONDON
Picture this: the smoky streets of Fitzrovia, pubs buzzing with stories and hearts longing for connection. That’s the world of The Midnight Bell – a poignant and passionate dance-theatre piece set in the backstreets of 1930s London.
Here, a cast of lovelorn characters gathers in a shadowy tavern to chase dreams, spill secrets and weather the storms of the human heart. It’s gritty, romantic and utterly compelling.
The production is inspired by the novels of Patrick Hamilton, the master of London’s literary underbelly. His stories captured the hopes and heartaches of ordinary people, and Matthew Bourne brings them to life with a signature twist of magic, movement and raw emotion.
THE AWARD-WINNING SHOW IS FINALLY COMING TO NEWCASTLE
First premiered in 2021, The Midnight Bell wowed audiences and critics alike, snagging five National Dance Award nominations. Bourne himself bagged Best Modern Choreography, while New Adventures favourite Michela Meazza earned Outstanding Female Modern Performance. It’s never been seen at Newcastle Theatre Royal before – and we’re buzzing to finally be able to see it right on our doorstep.

BOURNE’S BACK AND HE’S FEELING SENTIMENTAL
“The Midnight Bell, with its entangled tales of lonely souls looking for love, was rather appropriately the piece that brought us back to national touring after nearly two years away due to the pandemic,”
says Matthew Bourne
“At the time, audiences and company were masked and socially distanced, but immensely grateful to be back… So, I’m particularly thrilled to be bringing this heartfelt piece to more people, and to be presenting it in many venues for the first time,” he adds.
A DREAM TEAM BEHIND THE CURTAIN
Matthew Bourne reunites with his all-star creative dream team: Terry Davies (music), Lez Brotherston (set and costume design), Paule Constable (lighting design) and Paul Groothuis (sound design)
The full casting is still under wraps, but if past New Adventures productions are anything to go by, expect a mix of rising stars and fan-favourite faces.
