Sunset spots: Where to watch the day end in the North East

Living on the east, we’re known for our impressive sunrises, but there’s something a bit magical about a North East sunset.
Maybe it’s the golden light bouncing off centuries-old castles, the way the sky turns candyfloss-pink over the sea, or just the chance to pause and soak up some beauty after a long day.
Whatever the reason, we’re officially in our ‘watch the sky change colour for fun’ era – and luckily, our region is stacked with sunset-worthy spots.
From iconic landmarks to off-the-beaten-track gems, here’s where to head when the day winds down and you’re chasing those end-of-day glow vibes. Blankets and snacks very much encouraged.

Penshaw Monument

Chester Rd, Penshaw, Houghton le Spring, Sunderland DH4 7NJ
You haven’t truly done sunset in the North East until you’ve climbed Penshaw Hill and watched the sky explode behind that unmistakable Greek-style monument. Towering over Sunderland, Penshaw Monument gives you panoramic views across the Wear Valley, and on a clear night, you might even glimpse Durham Cathedral in the distance. Bonus: The west-facing position makes it an ideal golden hour perch.
Top tip: Bring a flask of tea and perch on the steps for a front-row seat to the show.
Bamburgh Castle Beach
Bamburgh Beach, Bamburgh NE69 7DF
A sunset here feels straight out of a fantasy novel. Bamburgh Castle silhouetted against a fiery sky is honestly something else. Stroll along the beach as the tide rolls in and the light fades – it’s drama, beauty, and peace all rolled into one.
If you’re lucky, you’ll catch the castle bathed in a peachy glow, perfect for those moody pics (no filter needed). And yes, dogs are very welcome too, so bring your furry friend.

The Angel of the North
Durham Rd, Low Eighton, Gateshead NE9 7TY
We know, we know – she’s been photographed from every angle possible. But have you watched the sun set behind the Angel, casting that 200-tonne masterpiece in soft silhouette? There’s something quietly powerful about standing below her wings as the sky puts on a show.
There’s usually a few like-minded sunset chasers around, so pack a few snacks, find a spot on the hill, and make an evening of it.
Longsands Beach
Longsands Beach, Tynemouth NE30 4HH
This spot feels like it was made for ice cream at sunset. Longsands is a local favourite for a reason – you’ve got sweeping sands, the scent of salty chips in the air, and a west-facing view that means maximum colour potential.
Take a late-afternoon dip if you’re brave (or bonkers), then wrap up in a hoodie and settle on the dunes as the sky melts into golds and pinks. The perfect post-beach reward? A scoop from Beaches & Cream just up the road.

Roseberry Topping
Newton-under-Roseberry, North Yorkshire TS9 6QR
Alright, we’re dipping just slightly into North Yorkshire territory here – but only just. If you’re up for a little leg burn, the climb to Roseberry Topping’s summit rewards you with 360-degree views that absolutely deliver at dusk.
From the top, you’ll see patchwork fields glowing in the golden light and the North Sea glinting in the distance. It’s got romantic evening picnic written all over it.
Durham’s Observatory Hill
Observatory Hill, Durham DH1 3LJ
For a sunset that pairs perfectly with cobbled streets and cathedral spires, Observatory Hill is a hidden(ish) gem. Tucked behind Durham University, this lush hilltop gives you an elevated view of the cathedral bathed in dusky hues. Add a bottle of something cold and a blanket, and you’ve nailed golden hour.
Plus, if you’re into a post-sunset wander, the riverside path winds down beautifully into town for a twilight pint.

Saltburn Cliffs
Lower Promenade, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire TS12 1HQ
Sunsets over Saltburn are wildly underrated. Climb the cliff path for a top-down view of the Victorian pier and the waves catching the last light of the day. There’s a poetic kind of peace here, with the only soundtrack being the sea below and maybe the odd gull trying its best.
Keep an eye out for the miniature lift carriages clanking up and down the hill – retro seaside charm at its best.
The Cheviot Hills
Cheviot Hills, Northumberland NE71 6RG
If you’re up for a bit of a mission, this one’s for the hikers and nature lovers. The Cheviots are vast, remote and endlessly rewarding – and at sunset, the colours rolling across the hills are out of this world. It’s one for those long summer evenings where you’ve got time to wander and want that proper ‘on top of the world’ feeling.
Make sure you pack layers – it cools off quickly up here, even in August.

Final Tips for Sunset Chasers:
- Check the time: Sunset times change fast – and the best colour usually happens after the sun dips.
- Bring the essentials: Layers, snacks, and your phone/camera (on low brightness – be kind to your fellow sky-watchers).
- Leave no trace: Pack out your rubbish and keep these beauty spots beautiful.
Whether you’re in it for the romance, the relaxation or just the incredible photo ops, there’s no shortage of stunning sunset backdrops across the North East. Just pick your spot, settle in, and let the sky do its thing.
