Inside the quirky and sustainable Leaf Hairdressing where you can now have a full pamper day

Leaf Hairdressing has been a Heaton institution for 30 years for different generations and is celebrating its anniversary this year.

Leaf is led by the fabulous Katie, who has decades of hairdressing experience and a serious passion for sustainability. From day one, Katie’s focus has been on delivering a top-tier customer experience with an eco-conscious twist.

Having lived in Heaton for nearly 30 years, Katie has seen many changes along Heaton Road. When she first opened the salon, the area was quiet, but today, it’s become a thriving hub at the heart of Heaton.
Katie is now joined by her daughter, Ruby, who is the salon manager and knows her way around the balayage brush. Ruby has now become the go-to for balayage at Leaf Hairdressing. Just check her work out here.

And now Katie has upped the game even further. Say hello to their brand-new well-being and beauty rooms.

Yes, you can now turn your hair appointment into a full-blown day of pampering. We’re talking hair, massage, coaching, waxing, nails, brows and even a cheeky glass of fizz – all under one very stylish roof.

Here’s everything you need to know…

THE LEAF HAIRDRESSING VIBE

Step into Leaf Hairdressing and you’ll feel inspired the moment you arrive. When Katie designed the salon, she set out to create something truly different – more like a fascinating home than a typical hairdresser’s. No matter where you sit, you’ll spot something unique reflected in the mirror behind you.

Think industrial chic with a twist. Leaf Hairdressing blends reclaimed scaffolding boards and copper pipework with moody ambient lighting and ceiling murals that wouldn’t look out of place in a Renaissance gallery. You’ll find yourself getting lost in them while you’re getting your hair washed.

The salon also doubles as an art gallery. You’ll spot striking environmental-themed prints by Dulk, alongside pieces by popular local artist Gavin Watson. There are even a couple of Hush prints –  a well-known name on the Newcastle art scene.

And it’s not just the decor that’s welcoming. The whole salon is inclusive and unisex and includes a private space for Muslim women to comfortably remove their headscarves during appointments. It’s these thoughtful touches that make Leaf so special.

Fancy a pre-night-out glow-up? Order a G&T and some nibbles with your cut, or sip on a luxe hot chocolate from their Hotel Chocolat velvetiser (topped with marshmallows, of course). They’ve even got fizz for those hair days for special occasions.

One of our absolute favourite features? The reclining backwash chairs. They give you a full-on massage while you’re getting your hair washed. Just lean back… and relax.

Leaf Hairdressing is proud to be one of the few Aveda salons in the North – a big reason why clients travel from all over to visit. Every style and colour treatment uses Aveda products, known not just for their performance, but for their plant-based ingredients and eco-conscious approach.

Leaf has partnered with Aveda for nearly 20 years for due it’s shared philosophy. Both believe that great hair shouldn’t come at the expense of the planet, with sustainability and environmental care at the heart of everything they do.

LIVED-IN COLOUR SPECIALIST HAIRDRESSERS IN NEWCASTLE

The Leaf Hairdressing team are lived-in colour specialists – which, if you’re not already obsessed, is the low-maintenance, high-impact hair trend that isn’t going anywhere. From sun-kissed blondes to natural-looking brunettes with rich dimensions, they’ll have you walking out the door swishing your locks.

Traditional highlighting isn’t going anywhere anytime soon—and at Leaf Hairdressing, they’re seeing more clients than ever embracing bright, beautiful blondes, especially with summer around the corner.

Feeling bold? Fiery red and rich copper tones are having a serious moment, too. Whether you’re after sun-kissed highlights or a head-turning red, they’ve got you covered.

Ruby, Katie’s daughter and salon manager, is famously known for her dreamy soft balayage – she’s got clients booking months in advance just to get in her chair. And whether it’s a seasonal refresh or a bold transformation, this team has the skills to make your hair goals happen.
