Harvest Festival in The Pit Village
Harvest Festival is a celebration of food grown on the land. The idea of the Harvest Festival as we know it dates back to the 1840’s when the church would be decorated with flowers and homegrown produce and hymns such as “We plough the field and scatter” and “All things bright and beautiful” would be sung.
Harvest Home at Pockerley Old Hall and The 1940s Farm
Traditional, harvest-time food and drink will be prepared and displayed at The 1940s Farm and Pockerley Old Hall. Harvest Home signified the end of the harvest. Suppers in celebration of the farming communities’ hard work took place around the region. Farm houses and barns were dressed for the supper and a Harvest Lord was often crowned – his role was to open the feast with singing, dancing and generally a good time!
This year, at The 1940s Farm, things will be a little different. While the farm wants to keep up the Harvest Home tradition, its wartime and rationing means that they will have to produce some very creative cooking and consult their Durham Wartime Cookery Book to make the most of the limited ingredients available.
