Visions of Ancient Egypt – Laing Art Gallery

Starting at Champollion’s 1822 decipherment of hieroglyphs and Carter’s 1922 discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, this exhibition takes a look at the appeal of ancient Egypt in art and design and how it’s been used for different purposes over time.

Admire paintings, photography, sculpture, fashion and jewellery from centuries ago to the present day. There will be artwork from well-known artists such as Joshua Reynolds, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, David Hockney and Sara Sallam.

You can also explore how multiple perceptions of Egypt have developed through invention, appropriation and subversion, as well as the Western fascination with ancient Egypt.
