HWC Presents: Women in Wine (Part 2)
It’s been (just over) a year since the first HWC tasting, and to celebrate, they’ve decided to revisit women in wine. Promoting and stocking wine made by women winemakers and women-led wineries is always on their mind, but in an industry in which women winemakers are definitely the minority, they can be hard to come by.
Despite being a male-dominated industry, the history of winemaking is littered with female trailblazers and connections. The ancient Egyptians believed that wine was a gift from the goddess of fertility and so the connection to women goes back centuries, but so does the exclusion of women. In that very same Ancient Egypt, upper-class men would have jars of wine placed in their tombs after death to allow them to enjoy the afterlife. Women, however, were not allowed wine in their tombs for fear they would get drunk and act in a promiscuous fashion in the afterlife.
As we enter the 21st century, more and more doors are being opened for women to be a part of the winemaking scene. It’s becoming more common to find women as winemakers, vineyard managers and sommeliers – the likes of @lucychilvers @alannalagamba @constantinasotelo and @nuriarenom to name a few inspirations.
Head to House Bar Heaton on Thursday 7th November at 7.00pm to celebrate more women in wine and one year of HWC. Tickets on sale from 12.00pm Monday 28th October, limited as always. £40 for six glasses, snacks and a good time.
