Sara Sallam: You Died Again on Screen – Laing Art Gallery

Sara Sallam is a contemporary Egyptian artist based in the Netherlands. Through her work, she aims to retell Egypt’s history, reclaim her ancient Egyptian heritage, and challenge colonial attitudes embedded in tourism, archaeology and other practices.

‘You Died Again on Screen’ is a film exploring the modern myths of the ‘mummy’. These are Sallam’s ancient ancestors, yet the media has transformed them into something grotesque and evil.

The film challenges these portrayals and demonstrates how her ancestors have been continuously dehumanised through their depictions on screen.
