The best places for pancakes in the North East
Your guide to the best pancakes in the North East (plus some sneaky special mentions that we just couldn’t miss out of a breakfast guide).
NEWCASTLE
Aidan’s Kitchen, Sandyford
11 Starbeck Avenue, Sandyford, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE2 1RH
The pancake stack that’s Insta famous.
Decide between a half-stack or full-stack – easy – then the hard choice: savoury or sweet. Opt for maple glazed bacon, blueberry compote and maple syrup, or those with a sweet tooth will die for the dulche de leche, chopped bananas, Chantilly cream and chocolate shavings.
One Kitchen & Social, Jesmond
229 Jesmond Rd, Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE2 1LA
One Kitchen & Social is a seriously good neighbourhood café that you must try if you haven’t been. Thick and fluffy pancakes, choose from two or three.
For true breakfast vibes opt for thick creamy Greek yoghurt, dark red berries and a good drizzle of honey and homemade raspberry coulis. Or if you fancy dessert for breakfast (no-one’s judging here), you can get scoops of vanilla ice cream, salted caramel sauce and chunks of fudge pieces.
Cook House, Ouseburn
Foundry Lane Studios, Foundry Lane, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE6 1LH
The pancake option on the brunch menu comes highly praised, served with poached rhubarb, honey, yoghurt and almonds.
Butterfly Cabinet, Heaton
200 Heaton Road, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE6 5HP
An oldie but a goodie which has to be on any list of the best pancakes in the North East. The pancake options here are plentiful, with five to choose from (including protein pancakes). Apple and cinnamon with apricot jam and a ramekin of cream tops our list.
2Knives Kitchen
Unit 43, Hoults Yard, Walker Road, Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE6 2HL
The breakfast menu at this bar and kitchen in Hoults Yard is epic. The pancakes (and vibes) are stacked and come with a range of different options from fruit and cream to bacon and maple syrup.
THE COAST
The Boatyard Brunch Café, Cullercoats
1 John St, Cullercoats, North Shields, NE30 4PL
These American pancakes are a fluffy stack of heaven served with berry compote, fresh fruit and Canadian maple syrup. You can add ice cream or candied streaky bacon. Highly rated.
Kith and Kin, Whitley Bay
172 Park View, Whitley Bay, NE26 3QW
OK, we’re cheating, but it feels wrong not to mention Kith and Kin in any list dedicated to breakfast food. Their French toast is heaven on a plate (we’re not exaggerating). Choose between miso apple or bacon with maple syrup, blueberries and crème fraiche.
Dil & The Bear, Tynemouth
18 Front Street, Tynemouth, North Shields, NE30 4DX
A very cute café in Tynemouth, delicious food and wholesome vibes. The pancakes have seasonal toppings so change regularly. The best we’ve ever tried? The cherry bakewell stack.
NORTHUMBERLAND
Nelson’s at the Park, Morpeth
Pavilion, The Avenue, Swarland, Morpeth, NE65 9BQ
This Morpeth café has the sole aim of bringing people together for good times – we’re here for that. The pancake options include bacon and maple syrup; banana, pecan and Nutella; Yoghurt, honey and seasonal fruit and have great reviews.
Rocking Horse Café and Gallery, Alnwick
Farm Rock Midstead, Alnwick, NE66 2TH
Open seven days a week from 10.00am – 5.00pm, this café’s vibe is to use as much Northumberland produce as possible. We’re cheating again – there’s no pancakes but seriously this breakfast stottie that we found in our research cannot be missed. It’s served all day and is legendary.
SUNDERLAND
The Salt House Kitchen
6 Queen’s Avenue, Seaburn, Sunderland, SR6 8DA
The Salt House Kitchen serves pancakes with a poached egg, streaky bacon and maple syrup – do we need to say any more? They actually have five sweet and savoury options to choose from, but it’s a no brainer for us.
Love Lily
1 Pier Point, Marine Walk, Roker, Sunderland, SR6 0PP
Take one look at their social media and you’ll be heading there immediately. By far the widest range of options on our list, there are more than 10 indulgent stacks to choose from, including white velvet, funfetti, kinder, and for savoury lovers – a Dirty American with sausage, bacon, cheese and egg.
DURHAM
The Pancake Café
11 Crossgate, St Margaret’s Garth, Durham, DH1 4PS
If you like savoury pancakes, this spot is for you. Halloumi and avocado? Yes. Red onion, feta and walnut? Yes. Plus many more savoury, sweet and brunch options.
Flat White Kitchen
40 Saddler Street, Durham, DH1 3NU
One of our most favourite brunch spots, plan to spend hours here with people you love. The pancake offering is different and we like it – ricotta pancakes, fresh fruit, maple syrup and cinder toffee butter.
Riverview Kitchen
20 Silver St, Durham, DH1 3RB
Finishing off strong – the pancakes at Riverview Kitchen in Durham are legendary. Just look for yourself. They’re stacked (and we mean stacked) with delicious treats. You might be in a sugar coma afterwards but we promise it’s worth it.
