Because who said Sundays should be boring?

Sundays are supposed to be the day for rest but why not make the most of your day off?

With the Metro running at least every 15 minutes during the day, there’s no excuse not to be out and about.

Yes, we know, with this cold and wet weather it can be tempting to just hibernate.

But as always, we’ve done the hard work for you…

We’ve rounded up some things to do in Newcastle and beyond that are perfect for autumnal days and are reachable via the Metro to make your next Sunday a Sunday Funday.

HLN TOP TIP: Save money every time you travel with a Pop Pay As You Go card.

VISIT THE NEWCASTLE QUAYSIDE MARKET

Nearest Metro station: Central Station (11 minutes)

Kickstart your Sunday morning with a relaxed walk along the Newcastle Quayside Market, which happens every Sunday from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM and it’s not to be missed. Wander around the market, and you’ll discover unique finds from some local independent stalls. From handcrafted jewellery and stylish accessories to beautiful artwork, ceramics, clothes, toys, and one-of-a-kind handmade crafts, there’s something for everyone – especially with Christmas around the corner.

All that retail therapy works up an appetite, right? Foodies, you’ll love the variety of food trucks and fresh produce stands. We’re talking mouth-watering cakes, sweets, homemade jams, aromatic coffee, and a tempting selection of street food. And on your way back to the Metro, why not pop into Alfie’s for a cheeky cocktail or go all out by pre-booking a bottomless brunch? It’s Sunday Funday, after all.

SUNDAYS ARE FOR BRUNCHING

Nearest Metro station: Chillingham Road (14 minutes)

Head to one of Heaton’s many brunch spots. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty English breakfast, a delicious pastry, or a cosy cup of coffee, you’ll find plenty of options to satisfy your taste buds helping you start your Sunday the right way.

And Heaton Road is HLN’s go-to hotspot for brunch. A firm fave is Fork in the Rose, a breakfast café-come-florist which is an all-around blooming welcoming place – the eggs benedict is a must.  If you’re from Newcastle, there’s a high chance you’ve already heard of the Butterfly Cabinet, this quirky, all-day breakfast spot tends to have queues out of the door over the weekends.

BE INSPIRED BY SOME CULTURE

Nearest Metro station: Stadium of Light (18 minutes)

If you’re after a Sunday with a difference, look no further than the National Glass Centre in Sunderland, which promises a captivating blend of art and innovation. This cultural gem invites you to explore the mesmerizing world of glass art. Wander through its galleries to discover exquisite glass sculptures and contemporary designs crafted by talented artists. Witness live glassblowing demonstrations that showcase the magic of shaping molten glass into beautiful forms.

If you’re feeling inspired, try your hand at glassblowing in interactive workshops. Finish your visit with a meal at the on-site café, offering scenic views of the River Wear. And on your way back home to the Metro why not have a pint pit stop at VAUX Brewery? VAUX has been a beloved name in Sunderland for almost 200 years, and their quirky taproom features 10 keg lines and two casks, plus a range of bottles, cans, spirits, wine and cider, as well as soft drinks and non-alcoholic options to explore.

SUNDAY LUNCH ROAST AND STROLL

Nearest Metro station: Gateshead (11 minutes)

Want to take your Sunday lunch to the next level? Look no further than TRÄKOL, a restaurant recommended by the Michelin Guide. They’re here to redefine your Sunday lunch experience and set the bar high for your future expectations. At TRÄKOL, it’s all about quality ingredients and tantalizing flavours, delivering a whole new kind of roast that you’ve probably never come across before.

Once you’ve indulged in this culinary delight, how about taking a leisurely stroll around Windmill Hill, a charming urban park? With stunning views of the River Tyne, it’s the perfect way to clear your mind and get ready for the week ahead.

FAMILY FUN AND FEASTING

Nearest Metro station: North Shields (13 minutes)

Sundays are for feasting, and there’s nothing better than some fish and chips when you’re by the seaside, right? Seaview Fish & Grill is a little swankier than your average fish and chip shop. Enjoy fresh, cooked-to-order fare from this family-run business that is offering a modern take on the British coastal classic.

Why not make a day of it and set sail on the Shields Ferry from North Shields which is covered by your All Zone Metro Day Ticket? Take a relaxing stroll through the peaceful South Marine Park in South Shields. Wave to the passengers on the miniature steam train as it circles the park, pop into a café for a steamy latte and watch your little ones playing in the two exciting play areas.
