6 of the best farm shops in Newcastle and the surrounding areas

You asked – we listened. After the popularity of our best farm shops in Tees Valley guide, we’re bringing you our favourites in Newcastle and the surrounding areas.

Local cheeses, mouth-watering baked goods, and home-grown produce, all aesthetically loaded into a basket and packed into a brown paper bag. Farm shop shopping is the stuff of dreams.

Shopping local is a win-win situation for the environment, for smaller businesses and for your kitchen cupboards. Plus, farm shops often have a cute cafe, or are set in idyllic surroundings, so they can be a great option for a wholesome day out.

To help you get started, we’ve found the 6 best farm shops in Newcastle and the surrounding areas.

High Life North

The Blagdon Farm Shop, Blagdon

Milkhope Centre, Blagdon, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE13 6DA

Seven miles north of Newcastle city centre, set in the beautiful Northumberland countryside you’ll find the Blagdon Farm Shop.

The Farm Shop, Butchery and Bakehouse stock items from over 50 different local providers, including mouth-watering puddings, biscuits, cakes and condiments.

Their award-winning butchery is the perfect pick for stocking up for a special BBQ this summer, paired with veggies delivered to the shop within 15 minutes of being picked, and some home-baked bread… our mouths are watering.

The North Acomb Farm Shop, Stocksfield

North Acomb Farm, Stocksfield, NE43 7UF

North Acomb Farm Shop rear and make the majority of their produce on site. From their Aberdeen Angus to their home-baked pies and pastries and even butter, everything is about as fresh as you can get.

Head there on a Saturday afternoon for a mooch and a scoop of Morwick Dairy ice cream, and pick up some of their homemade sausages, using their own seasoning recipe, for brekkie the next day. They’re the ultimate cure for any Sunday sore head.

The Honey Tree, Heaton

68 Heaton Road, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE6 5HL

Okay, so it’s not a farm shop, but it’s giving farm shop.

The Honey Tree in Heaton is an independent health food shop specialising in healthy, fresh and local organic foods. They have fresh veg delivered weekly, and fresh bread delivered daily, all sourced with taste, health and welfare in mind.

Our favourite thing about The Honey Tree is their veg boxes. Each week the team make up veg boxes based on what is in season and what customers are loving at the time – so it’s always different. Plus, if you can’t make it to the store, they can deliver – just check their website for more details.

Broom House Farm Shop, Durham

Broom House Farm, Witton Gilbert, Durham, DH7 6TR

Broom House Farm Shop won both Small Farm Shop of the Year and Farm Shop Butchery of the Year in 2023, so it’s a must visit.

Although they specialise in high quality beef, lamb and pork you can also shop lots of other local delights, like cheese, honey and dairy products, all while enjoying gorgeous views over Durham City Centre.

We recommend visiting on a weekend morning and heading to the cafe for the freshest Full English ever, with ingredients all supplied by the farm – but get there early, it’s super popular.

High Life North

Brocksbushes Farm Shop and Tea Room, Corbridge

Brocksbushes Farm, Northumberland, NE43 7UB

Brocksbushes started 40 years ago simply selling homegrown produce from a flatbed trailer.

Now a farm shop, tearoom and ‘pick your own’ venue, it’s grown so popular that summer 2024 will see the team move into their much larger, brand new home featuring an in-house butchery, larger cafe and children’s play barn.

If you can’t wait until then, head to the award-winning farm shop and cafe for an amazing selection of cakes, scones, pies, pastries and produce – with tonnes of gluten and wheat free options available.

HLN TOP TIP: Check out their selection of frozen ready meals made in-house by their chefs in the Farm Kitchen.

High Life North

Northumberland Cheese Farm, Blagdon

The Cheese Farm, Green Lane, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE13 6BZ

If you’re a cheese lover (and who isn’t?!), you have reached Nirvana.

The Cheese Farm in Blagdon is the home of the Northumberland Cheese Company and houses a shop and cafe which will fulfil all of your fromage fantasies.

Pop into the shop in the ‘Cheese Loft’ to sample their delicious cheeses, chutneys and crackers, and pick up everything you need to assemble the perfect grazing board for your next get together. They also stock lots of locally produced beers, wines and spirits to pair with it, and the expert staff will be more than happy to advise.

Then, check out the cafe and treat yourself to an Afternoon Tea complete with sandwiches, cheese, cheese scones and sweet treats. The perfect day out.
