Nestled in the heart of Northumberland, Matfen Hall is a countryside retreat to experience a life of luxury.

Set in over 300 acres of enchanting parkland and rich in heritage, this luxurious hall has a range of stunning rooms, plenty of dining destinations, a spa and fitness suite and a championship golf course.

But when we thought Matfen Hall couldn’t be any more magnificent, now the grand Northumberland hotel has just had a multi-million pound refurbishment over the past 12 months.

Matfen Hall has finally reopened its doors after five months of closure for phase two of the redevelopment, so we took a first look inside the newly updated country hotel and we weren’t disappointed.

WHAT TO EXPECT…

A new restaurant and bar

Brand-new Cloisters Restaurant and Bar – built in the former internal courtyard, now enclosed by an incredible glass roof – has been added to improve on an already exquisite guest experience. Indulge in steak and seafood classics in the atmospheric surroundings of this new stylish dining destination with the stunning architecture of the courtyard, while a mezzanine area provides perfect views of Matfen’s Great Hall’s magnificent stained-glass window.

Upgraded décor

During lockdown, the hotel’s Great Hall luxury rooms were upgraded, along with many other facilities, including the Great Hall and Emerald Restaurant. But now after phase two, other bedrooms and public areas have undergone renovation to an even higher standard providing an up-to-date take on traditional elegance and refinement.

A new exclusive afternoon tea lounge

Perfectly positioned to overlook Matfen Hall’s vast parkland, The Orangery has become an exclusive lounge for serving quintessential afternoon tea. Indulge yourself in a highly finished selection of delicious pastries and desserts, as Pastry Chef Richard Winfield provides you with flavours that are both familiar and exciting. And why not wash it down with a glass of Laurent-Perrier Champagne?

An enhanced dining experience

A beautiful original fireplace has been opened up in the Sapphire Room, one of Matfen Hall’s private dining areas and a new, state-of-the-art kitchen has been introduced to enhance guests’ luxurious dining experiences.

A free bottle of champagne when you book an April stay

Matfen Hall has recently announced that Laurent-Perrier will be the official supplier of Champagne at the estate. To celebrate this, they are offering each new April overnight booking a complimentary bottle from the Innovator in Champagne.

Improved accessibility

A guest lift has been installed in the Great Hall side of the hotel to improve accessibility.

A new senior management team

A new senior management team is in place, led by General Manager, Nathan White, formerly of Hoar Cross Hall, and ably supported by Operations Manager Alessandro de Sclavis (global 5-star experience, including Trump Turnberry) and Rooms Division Manager, Shaun Rowlatt (The Farmhouse at Redcoats and The Grove).
