A month in the life of our editor: Chapter 4/12: April 2024
Everytime I sit down to write this feature I look through my camera roll to see what I’ve been doing.
It’s 90% food, 5% pictures of Henry looking cute and 5% screenshots of clothes that I probably won’t buy.
So yes, as expected this has been a food-heavy month, but Newcastle’s scene is so strong right now we really can’t complain.
Pattern – slow networking and co-working
On Thursday this week I went to a super cool slow networking event – the brainchild of my pal, photographer Chris Owens. The concept is simple – spend the day co-working with likeminded people and discover common interests and work opportunities without forcing conversations. It was a great idea, a good laugh and I met and spoke to some really useful connections that I probably wouldn’t have met at a ‘traditional’ networking event (perhaps because I refuse to go to them but that’s beside the point). If you’re a freelancer, creative or someone who just works from home and wants some company now and again, I’d highly recommend signing up to the Pattern newsletter to find out about the next one.
Checking out Hula Co with Beth
Authentic Hawaiian and killer cocktails? Yes.
Beth and I checked out a new concept from the guys at TwentyTwenty. Hula Co (next to Empress in Newcastle), serves up tiki fun with a Latin influence and it was fun to see dishes that you don’t see on other North East menus. Think baked bao buns with pulled pork, poke bowls, tacos with a twist and my favourite, the corn esquites which is a delicious creamy corn dip (get it with the tortilla chips to dip). Booking a bottomless brunch here asap.
Saturday lunching at St. Vincent
My absolute favorite way to spend a Saturday is a long lunch at St. Vincent in Newcastle. This restaurant has a joint tie with Ophelia as my favourite place to eat in Newcastle.
The best Bloody Mary’s, a specials board that’s always on point, the most delicious foccaccia (essential for mopping up all kinds of delicious sauces – and the best vibes.
Friday nights at HWKRLAND
Speaking of vibes – if you like street food, good music and a laidback scene, Friday nights at the newly reopened HWKRLAND are the one. I’ll be found here every Friday night possible over summer.
Pepo Cocktails serves cracking amaretto sours, Smoke & Sear brings it with the meat and whether its rain or shine, the atmosphere here is always just fun, happy vibes.
