When it comes to planning a wedding, we’re always looking for ways to make our wedding unique.

And one new alternative wedding trend that’ll make your mouth water is cheese wedding cakes. Yes, that’s right cheese lovers, a wedding cake made up of towers of cheesy goodness (no, you’re not dreaming!)

Gone are the days of traditional fruit cake with marzipan and thick white icing, cheese wedding cakes are here to change things up and it’s not hard to see why they are so popular.

From bespoke designs to match your wedding theme to being a budget-friendly option, a homemade cheese wedding cake makes a real statement and your guests won’t stop talking about it any time soon.

But where can you get a cheese wedding cake? Grate in Jesmond, that’s where. We caught up with founder and talented cheesemonger, Moz, to find out why her artisan cheese wedding cakes are all the rage for savoury-loving couples right now…

A REAL CROWD PLEASER

‘We know the best cheeses for a crowd, you want crowd-pleasing cheeses that will appeal to most palates, so you don’t have lots of leftovers. We give you the freedom when picking your cheese, so there’s no obligation to follow the traditional route of “hard, soft, blue and something else” – although it’s a classic for a reason’

BUDGET-FRIENDLY OPTION

‘A cheese wedding cake is an alternative to a traditional evening buffet or a sweet dessert course if you don’t have a sweet tooth. We can either stack cheeses like a traditional wedding cake or you can display them however you like. We can even lay the cheese out buffet style for you to have your very own ultimate wedding cheese board. Plus, we don’t charge a premium just because you mention it’s for a “wedding” and prices start from £60’

THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS

‘Couples can come in anytime to talk to me about what they need, we have done cakes for small weddings of 20 people right up to 300 people, so anything is possible.’

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

‘You can take home samples of any cheese you want to try and if you book your cake with us, the cost of the samples is deducted from the final cost.’

EXPERT RECOMMENDATIONS

‘Visuals are important, as most cheese isn’t super photogenic. I always try to look at the colours involved. Something like Cornish Yarg which is wrapped in nettles looks amazing as a base. I try to include brie-style cheese as they’re beautiful and crowd pleasing, and you can’t go wrong with a baby Stilton truckle for the blue cheese lovers. Kirkhams Lancashire also works well as a base, as the diameter isn’t huge like a cheddar.’

BESPOKE TO YOUR WEDDING THEME

‘We offer a completely bespoke service and we don’t have fixed prices, so the sky is the limit. Whether you’re after a rustic cake to match your boho wedding or a contemporary cheese wedding cake with classic flowers to fit into your stately home venue, I’ll work with you to create the wedding cake of your dreams.’

ONE LESS STRESS

‘We offer Northumbrian Pantry chutneys in bulk (so you’re not paying for loads of jars), and Fine Cheese Co crackers, including gluten-free ones. If you have any vegan guests we have a selection of artisan vegan cheeses, thanks to our friends at Something Good. We also provide cake stands, supports and lifts and we can deliver locally via Bud Couriers.’
