We’ve rounded up some romantic date ideas for those cold, wet and dull days that can be reached by Metro.

As the leaves begin to change and a crispness fills the air, there’s a sense of romance that comes with autumn.

But this season of cold, wet and dull days can make it difficult to find something to do for your next date. As always, we’ve got you covered, we’ve rounded up date ideas in Newcastle and beyond.

To save the argument of who is going to drive, how about using the Metro to travel to your next date? From being affordable to avoiding traffic jams, Metro is a quick and easy way to get around Tyne and Wear, and we’ve found some great Metro dates…

HLN TOP TIP: We recommend getting a  Pop Pop Pay As You Go card as it’s the most cost-effective way to get around with travel cheaper than single and day tickets and capped to ensure you never pay too much.

A WHOLESOME WEEKEND DATE

Nearest Metro station: Monkseaton

There’s no better way to start your date than with a spot of brunch.  And we know just the place – Scandi-inspired lifestyle café, Föda, that serves everything from Turkish toast to eggs benedict Italian and smoked salmon on toast.

After fuelling up for the day, just a 10-minute walk along the road, embrace the seasonal vibes by getting your skates on at Whitley Bay Ice Rink where there are three, two-hour sessions a day. No booking is required, which is ideal for those spontaneous date days, and Friday evening even has a disco session.

Following your morning of fun, food and festivities, treat yourself to a chilled beer, wine or seasonal cocktail (a mulled wine has your name on it) at the Left Luggage Room, a speciality micropub nestled inside Monkseaton Metro station.

A CULTURED DATE DAY

Nearest Metro station: Gateshead

There’s nothing like a spot of culture to really get you inspired.

With ever-changing exhibitions, a gift shop stocked with quirky and unique local goods and one of the best viewpoints in Newcastle with stunning views across the Quayside, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art is a must.

And while you’re there, why not extend your date day by having a romantic rooftop meal at SIX Baltic before being entertained at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music (previously known as the Sage Gateshead)? Whether you want to get into the Halloween spirit at Hocus Pocus in Concert on 25th October or fancy a good ol’ singalong and dance to Beverly Knight’s soulful classic hits on 29th October, there’s something for everyone.

AN EVENING AT THE THEATRE

Nearest Metro station: Sunderland

Metro offer: Free travel via the Metro (within two hours of your show)

A cultured date night at the theatre brings all the romantic vibes, right? Escape from all your worries – and the cold outside – to be entertained. The Sunderland Empire‘s theatrical calendar this autumn features a show for every type of couple.

Whether you want to get into the spooktacular seasonal spirit with The Rock Orchestra on 26th October, laugh out loud at John Richardson: The Knitwit tour on 28th October or sing along to Greatest Days, the official Take That musical from 14th November and Sister Act on 27th November, the options are endless.

TRAVEL BACK IN TIME

Nearest Metro station: Byker

A date with a difference, the Victoria Tunnel in Ouseburn promises an unforgettable adventure into the depths of history. After you get kitted out with helmets and torches, you’ll descend into this hidden underground tunnel.

As you walk through the preserved 19th-century wagonway, you’ll learn about its fascinating history and the role it played during World War II.  After your adventure why not nip into The Cycle Hub? With gorgeous romantic views of the sunset over the River Tyne, warm up with a Bailey’s hot chocolate with your loved one and talk about everything you’ve learned from the past.

FESTIVE FLOWERS & A REFRESHING WALK

Nearest Metro station: West Jesmond

It’s never too early to get into the festive spirit, so how about a festive flower workshop at The Flower Folk, Brentwood Avenue? With all materials for the class included and light refreshments to help you along the way, all you have to do is turn up, escape the everyday stresses in your life and let your creativity bloom.

And if you’re blessed with dry weather, why not take a leisurely stroll through the enchanting Exhibition Park? The crisp air and the sound of rustling leaves bring all the romantic vibes.

HLN TOP TIP: While you’re on Brentwood Avenue in Jesmond, why not pop into Nucasa for some retail therapy and discover the ultimate autumn essentials?

AN ENCHANTING HISTORICAL DATE

Nearest Metro station: Wallsend

A date at Segedunum Roman Fort & Museum is a fascinating journey through history and a unique experience. Explore the well-preserved Roman Fort, walk along the ancient walls, and discover the rich heritage of our region.

The interactive exhibits and informative displays make learning fun, and the panoramic views from the tower are breathtaking. After the historical adventure, you’ve probably worked up an appetite, so why not extend your date day and have a hearty, romantic meal at Sopranos Italian restaurant?

FOR THE COMPETITIVE COUPLES

Nearest Metro station: Monument

A date night at The Gate promises an exciting blend of entertainment and dining all under one roof – a perfect escape from the autumnal weather outside. Whether you fancy a juicy burger from The Hustle or good ol’ pub grub at The Mayfair Pub & Kitchen, start your evening at one of The Gate’s tempting restaurants.

After dinner, it’s time to get the competition really started. From VR gaming and arcades at YUME World to virtual darts at WonderBar, and axe throwing at Game of Throwing, go head-to-head with some healthy competition. Plus, why not stop off at Selfie Central to capture memories of your day?

COASTAL COFFEE AND CAKES

Nearest Metro station: South Shields

If you’re trying to save your pennies for Christmas (we don’t blame you it’s creeping up so fast), here’s an affordable date day idea. How about getting wrapped up for a refreshing walk on Sandhaven Beach to blow those cobwebs away?

And while you’re there, we’re sure that you’ll spot a quirky blue van that’s home to Bessy’s Sweet Bakes. Warm up with a steamy freshly brewed latte and brighten your day with a sweet treat at this hidden gem on South Shields seafront, whether it be a Ferrero cookie sandwich, an Oreo millionaire shortcake or an old-school sprinkle cake.

PUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO THE TEST

Nearest Metro station: Benton

Put your communication skills to the test at The Riddle Room a hidden gem escape room in Forest Hall. A retired detective is back for one last mission but needs your help to solve The Case Of The Leather Apron. As the clock counts down, you have an hour to solve the riddles, decipher the clues, crack the codes and play the games to find the key to escape.

All that escaping is hard work, so why not pop into Sands of Tyne for a cuppa to refuel? Or you might even need something a bit stronger, like a chilled vino or two, all depending on how well your escape room experience went.
