So apparently 80% of us are wearing the wrong size bra… Shocking, right?

We wouldn’t hobble around in shoes that are too small or big, so why we suffer with ill fitting bras? Although we know we should go, a lot of us feel nervous about getting a bra fitting to find our perfect size. But why? We’re all women, we all have boobs.

From painful wires that dig in to our bras constantly riding up, we need bras that are comfy and give us the support that we need. If you’ve got them, flaunt them ladies!

HLN were lucky enough to be invited down to Bravissimo Newcastle for a bra fitting, so I plucked up the courage and took one for the team to see what it’s really like…

All I can say is that it’s not as bad as you think. The ladies are so lovely, make you feel at ease and give you an enjoyable experience helping you embrace your assets and femineity. And Bravissimo doesn’t use tape measures to fit bras all their fitting is done by eye – a very talented team that make you feel uplifted in every way!

Whilst we were there, we chatted to the lovely Tallulah Dickson who shared her bra fitting wisdom about how we can find the perfect bra size.

Why is it important to wear the right bra size?

It’s so important and I don’t think people realise until they come in and put the right bra on and feel the difference. If you’re in the right size bra it’s going to help you fashion-wise, but also mentally because you’re going to get that coverage and lift and it’s going to make you feel so good about yourself.

Even though nobody can see it, it makes you feel better. Day to day you’ll feel much more positive about yourself and if you’re comfortable, it’s a good place to start feeling more confident.  Healthwise, it gives you a nice posture, it’s not going to dig into your breast tissue and it’s going to be comfortable for you.

What problems occur if you don’t wear the right bra size?

You’ll experience some pain. A lot of the time ladies come in with really small red marks around them and that’s sometimes because the bra too big, which a lot of people don’t realise they think down to a bra being too small. It happens when the bra moves up and down and where the wires digging into you.

Ladies also have back problems if they wear the wrong size for too long which leads to really bad posture.

What type of bra styles suit different sized boobs?

Here we’re real advocates for big boobs. We say you can wear anything.  It’s up to you to try different styles and see how they suit and fit you. We would never say if you have big or small boobs you can’t wear a certain style because it’s about what you feel comfortable in.

Here we have got bigger big women in mind but if smaller boobs women didn’t want to wear a bra then that’s fine too, it’s all about what makes them feel comfortable. We all have a choice there shouldn’t be any pressure.

How do you know if your bra fits right?

When your bra fits right the wires in the middle of your bra, are going to sit flush with your skin and not on top of your breast tissue, which a lot of people don’t know.

We want the back to be nice and flat. We recommend fastening a new bra on its loosest hooks so that you can tighten it if it stretches over time as you wash and wear it.

When your bra cups fit well, your boobs should be fully enclosed in the cups – there is no ridge or bulging over the sides or top. If you’re bulging or your bra cups are wrinkling, you’ll probably need a different cup size.

How does wearing a bra empower women?

I definitely think bras have been born for empowering women. Although I know the symbol of feminism is a burning bra, but it’s definitely a choice to wear a bra or not but they can make you feel so much better about yourself.

You choose your bra exactly how you want it to be. It makes people feel amazing inside and out and it isn’t just for their partners, it’s for themselves. I think that it makes women feel so much differently. You always feel good in a brand new underwear set even though no one can see it.

What made you want to get into the industry?

I have quite big breasts for being small. When I was younger, I would go shopping with my mom and we’d be in despair after going into certain shops where there’s such a lack of diversity and sizes in the shop.

And then when I came to Bravissimo and got fitting it was like a breath of fresh air. They made me much better about myself and made me realise that I’m not a complete freak. When I came in, none of the girls were like, wow, they were just like this is what we see every day.

After that experience, I know how much that reflects my life. So, I wanted to give that back to women who are in a similar position that I was, and it can make a real difference in people’s lives.

What’s your advice to women who might be worried about coming in for a bra fitting?

Nobody should feel shy and scared about them. We get a lot of young girls that come in here and they’re so nervous but it’s absolutely fine.

The ladies here are so friendly. The girls always come out of it and say it wasn’t as bad as they first thought. It’s so worth it to feel comfy giving you one less stress and worry in life.
