Are you a marketer looking to learn tried and tested strategies guaranteed to take your skills to the next level? Fabric have got just the course for you…

Flexible, remote, practical, and applied… Fabric’s next Marketing Strategy course launches on Monday 6th September. Here’s everything you need to know – and how to win a free spot…

MEET FABRIC CREATOR: LISA EATON

Marketing enthusiast and pioneer; has been known to occasionally moonlight as a salsa instructor.

Lisa Eaton is a dedicated marketer, through and through. Founder of award-winning agency Unwritten Group, host of marketing podcast Ginwag, teacher of everything she loves, and now the creator of Fabric, she has worked in marketing for the best part of 20 years – creating and delivering strategies for a huge range of clients and seeing incredible results.

But Lisa describes the early days of her career as ‘trial and error – at best’.

“Sometimes I’d be hoping and praying for a good result,” she recalls. “I knew in my heart that there had to be a better, more strategic, process-driven way.”

Growing up, Lisa had a passion for all things creative. She also remembers having always loved that process of taking an idea and seeing it come to life – so building her own business was always on her radar. The only thing she didn’t know? What her business would be.

It wasn’t until she’d worked in creative agencies for 10 years, with clients across the globe, that Lisa took the plunge and started out on her own: creating the award-winning marketing agency, Unwritten Group. As an agency, Unwritten is unique; it has marketing strategy at its core, whilst producing creatives that have changed people’s lives and behaviours forever. And the team there practise the very same process Lisa now teaches at Fabric.

“For years at Unwritten, I perfected that process in every way possible,” Lisa explains. “I taught it to any marketer that crossed my path, but I also knew that I needed to share it with every marketer out there who had ambition like I did. Who wanted to do amazing things with their career and change the world a little along the way.

“So I set out to create a training academy like no other – one that would complement academic learning but would bridge the gap between theory and practical application: giving its learners (at all stages of their careers) the opportunity to learn and practise at the same time. Teaching the skills that would be used every single day in their day job to propel an organisation forward and help build results.”

That training academy was Fabric. And the rest, as they say, is history…

MEET THE COURSE CREATOR: MADDY HOUGHTON

Takes Lisa’s wild ideas, makes them a reality.

Now Head of Delivery at Fabric, Maddy Houghton’s journey into marketing came from a lifelong desire to be creative but being (and we quote), ‘terrible at anything arty’.

An obsession with words and the impact they can have led Maddy to study English Literature at university. But once she’d graduated, she was met with the predicament so many of us face: the seemingly never-ending search for a job, armed only with a small sense of direction and no post-graduate work experience.

But it wasn’t until she started exploring potential career paths that Maddy discovered just how creative you can be in marketing, without having specific creative ‘skills’. The only problem? Because she’d not studied Marketing at university, no industry employer was willing to hire her.

Maddy started jumping around jobs that paid minimum wage and did all she could to pick up scraps of marketing knowledge and experience wherever she could. She completed a number of training programmes and professional development courses, but still struggled to secure many interviews at marketing agencies.

“The courses I did were great in giving me a theoretical understanding of what marketing is,” says Maddy. “But I still had no real idea of what the jobs I was applying to actually entailed.

“Then I met Lisa in 2017. She took a chance on me and gave me my first real role in marketing – finally! And she taught me the steps to building a marketing strategy that actually works. I guess it was only then that I began to understand the true impact that marketing can have on the world.”

Still at a junior stage in her marketing career, Maddy was able to work with some world-renowned clients at Lisa’s agency, Unwritten Group; managing large strategic projects, achieving pretty incredible results for organisations in all sectors, and developing way quicker than she could ever have imagined.

“In 2019, I got itchy feet and packed my bags to go travelling. But I actually shed a few tears over leaving Unwritten!” says Maddy. “I asked Lisa if I could keep working for her while I was away. We’d just finalised an onboarding process to help new members learn our approach to building a marketing strategy, and we realised it had the legs to become a different beast altogether. So Lisa sent me away to build the Fabric programme course while I was travelling.”

Just a year later, of course, a global pandemic was to hit. And while it meant Maddy’s travels were cut short, it also gave Lisa the chance to take a step back from Unwritten and the pair to fast-track the building of Fabric into what we see today.

“It took me 10 years of failing, of trying different techniques and figuring out what worked and what didn’t to really understand what makes marketing unique and so unbelievably effective,” explains Lisa. “When you get it right, it’s magic.
